If there's one piece of skincare advice that every dermatologist and aesthetic specialist agrees on, it's this: wear sunscreen every single day. No serum, cream, or treatment can undo the damage caused by unprotected sun exposure. SPF is your most powerful weapon against premature aging.
Why Sun Protection Matters
Up to 90% of visible skin aging is caused by UV exposure — a phenomenon known as photoaging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles, sagging, hyperpigmentation, and uneven texture. In Pakistan's climate, where sun exposure is significant throughout the year, daily SPF is not optional — it's essential.
SPF, UVA, and UVB — What's the Difference?
UVB rays cause sunburn and are the primary cause of skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are responsible for premature aging. A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB; look for PA+++ or higher for UVA protection.
How to Choose the Right Sunscreen
For daily use, choose an SPF 30–50 broad-spectrum sunscreen. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, opt for a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula. For dry skin, a moisturising sunscreen with hyaluronic acid works well. Tinted sunscreens offer additional protection against visible light and blue light.
How to Apply Correctly
Most people don't apply enough sunscreen. Use approximately half a teaspoon for your face and neck. Apply 15–20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2 hours — or after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying.
SPF and Aesthetic Treatments
If you're investing in aesthetic treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, or microneedling, SPF is absolutely non-negotiable. Post-treatment skin is more sensitive to UV damage, and skipping sunscreen can undo your results and cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
